Hudson Valley Tole and Decorative Painters (HVTDP) is a local chapter of the National Organization of the Society of Decorative Painters. The Society of Decorative Painters has approximately 14,000 members across the globe and over two hundred affiliated chapters located in nearly fifty countries that actively promote the art of decorative painting. Painters around the world can sign up to receive a free of charge monthly e-newsletter containing general information about SDP and it’s activities @ www.decorativepainters.org
Decorative Painting is defined by the Society of Decorative Painters as a “diverse art form that utilizes a variety of techniques to decorate both functional and non-functional surfaces”. Painting surfaces are limitless. Decorative painting is taught and learned in a systematic, skill building environment. Any skill level is welcome. As the painter becomes more familiar with the different techniques, the individual creativity level soars. As part of our learning process, we invite fellow members to teach a painting project each month. At least once a year, the chapter brings in a certified and accomplished decorative painter to show us their techniques during a seminar.
Our chapter, Hudson Valley Tole and Decorative Painters was formed in November 1988 by a group of women who had the desire to learn and share techniques with fellow artisans. We are proud to note that some of these original charter members are still part of our existing group. Our members come from both sides of the Hudson River and from Orange, Dutchess, Rockland and Sullivan counties as well as northern New Jersey.
Our general meetings are held the second Saturday of each month at the Munger Cottage located in Cornwall, NY.. The meeting starts at 10:00 am. The meetings are followed by a painting project. The chapter has offered projects in various media including watercolor, oil, colored pencil, palette knife and acrylics.
Seminars start an hour earlier at 9:00 am and are open to non-members as space permits. There are no meetings on seminar days.
We welcome new members of all skill levels to join us.
